Some of the comments to the video indicate Midnight Rider gimmicks were also used by Sam Houston and Jerry Lawler(?) but I can't validate either. I can see them doing the whole "I disappear and the masked man shows up" gimmick, just not sure if it was Midnight Rider. Seems particularly weird for Memphis, although really is anything too weird for Memphis. Would have thought they'd have billed him as "The Masked King" or some other completely obvious name to hit fans over the head with.

Dick Slater's Wikipedia lists an alternative ring name of Mr. Florida. No idea if he ever wore a mask, it was just a nickname or what as I only remember him as Dirty Dick Slater, but I had been looking some people up lately and had thought I remembered seeing the "Mr. Florida" reference on his page.

I have definitely not seen Paul Jones in that gimmick so thanks for the heads up.

I'm surprised I missed the JCP thing since that's definitely an era/territory I should have been watching. Although I don't always remember the super brief "mystery tag team" entrants (seemed like the Dynamic Dudes were once billed as Batman and Robin or some such similar angle).

Here's the link I based the Bill Watts comment on FWIW:

The Rhodes Magnum thing was done for JCP it was a brief storyline in spring of 86 where the Midnight Express refused to defend their NWA World Tag belts vs Dusty & Magnum thus came the James Boys ,

Mr Florida was Number One Paul Jones I have a edit of him you can find in my FCW collection

I know there was another midnight Rider not sure if it was Bill Watts or not(Since Dusty Owned the Gimmick)

As far as i know Dick Slater never wore a mask

Ah, good points I should have known about Hogan, Armstrong and... Slater? I didn't get to see much of FCW directly but am thinking that's who Mr. Florida was. I could be recalling incorrectly.

I can honestly say I never saw the Rhodes/Magnum gimmick. What territory was it in? Was it a one-off or a longer run?

And one to add that I also can't believe I forgot - Downtown Charlie Brown! Because no one could have recognized Jimmy Valiant from his body type, hair/beard sticking out, and mannerisms. :) His may have been the second worst disguise ever (Rhodes' Midnight Rider takes first for me).

I know Watts also did a Midnight Rider gimmick. Anyone else that you know of? It's probably because I'm a mark for masked men, but I love the whole gimmick this represents.

Nice selection! I'm thinking mini-tournament - Stagger Lee, Yellow Dog, Midnight Rider, and Red River Jack. Who else am I missing?
