Era - Late 1800s / 1900s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Ruby Robert Fitzsimmons may very well be one of the finest fighters in the history of the sweet science. An argument can be made that he could have laid claim to have been the best fighter in the world from Lightweight all the way up to Heavyweight at varying parts of his career. Fitzsimmons's tremendous punching power came from years of blacksmith's work during his youth in New Zealand, hammering away at the forge.

When he did take up boxing as a profession, Fitzsimmons quickly rose up, having learned from the school of the great Jem Mace, beating Nonpareil Jack Dempsey(the original, not the later, more famous knockout artist) for the Middlweight title of the world and would destroy Heavyweight Tom Sharkey only for referee Wyatt Earp(yes, the lawman) to disqualify him on an exceedingly dubious call.

Fitzsimmons would not be held back by that infamous "loss," but instead took on the Heavyweight champion of the world, James J. Corbett in 1897, and while Corbett got his punches in, Fitzsimmons landed his brutal Solar Plexus punch in the 14th round to win the fight. Two years later, James J. Jeffries would overcome horrendous damage to knock Fitzsimmons out and claim his title.

Amazingly enough, Fitzsimmons would move down a weight class and win the Light Weavyweight title in 1903, beating George Gardiner and would even fight again at Heavyweight against future Heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, failing to win, but yet showing courage in crossing the color line against a top level opponent at the age of 44.
