Description
Era - 1930s / 1940s - Boxing - Middleweight

Perhaps one of the most overlooked fighters in history, Charlie Burley is synonymous among hardcore fight fans with the fighter that anyone avoids, if they can. He never received a title shot, but was feared by many champions and future champions.

One of the best technicans of all time, Burley was a defensive master, operating in the margins, with marvelous footwork and feints that often made fools of his opponents. Unfortunately, his skills may have been too effective, and fighters across the board were wary of facing him. Even the arguable pound for pound greatest of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson wanted no part of a fight with Burley, seeing little to gain and much to lose.

As such, Charley Burley found himself in the shark tank that some called the "Black Murderer's Row," a group of skilled fighters who were avoided by all but each other. Lloyd Marshall, Holman Williams and the Cocoa Kid were all fellow outcasts, fighting each other on a number of occasions.

Burley did manage to notch a few signature wins outside the Row, however, beating Fritzie Zivic and the Old Mongoose himself, Archie Moore. He also challenged future Heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles, but came up short. It should also be noted that Burley was never knocked out in his decade and a half career.
