Era - 2000s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Few fighters successfully move up to Heavyweight from the lighter ranks, with the likes of Sam Langford and Bob Fitzsimmons serving as exceptions. Another exception could be that of James Toney. By the late 1990s, Toney had fought an outstanding career at Middleweight and Super Middleweight, but was ready to take on heavier challenges.

Toney's conditioning generally consisted of a routine of hard sparring, enough to keep the skills sharp, but not enough to keep off the pounds, and as such, his frame expanded horizontally. Even so, his skills remained, enough to allow him to claim a shocking upset over all-time great, Evander Holyfield, schooling the Real Deal over nine rounds. Toney would also end up winning fights over both John Ruiz and Hasim Rahman, both of which were later overruled due to failed drug tests.
