Aeolus - Fastest Vanilla Plane

Description
Top speed horizontal/level flight:
2583 m/s = 9298.8 km/h = 5778 mph = Mach 7.59

This is the fastest controllable vanilla creation, as I can't find any faster ones. Please let me know if you do. Llohr has notified me that he has hit the ~9000 km/h speed limit as well, though he hadn't listed it anywhere. He also told me that you can sometimes go past the speed limit, if you're lucky with the simulation. This creation is still the fastest plane, if you define a plane like Shadé: it has functional control surfaces. I just put those on to ensure it stays agile at higher speeds.

I thought I'd try my hand at air racing, but I didn't have a plane yet. I made an engine first, then built a plane around it.

Features:
  • Go faster than the record for manned rocket-powered aircraft (7270 km/h)!
  • Accelerate to the speed of sound in a few seconds!
  • Hover in place by holding Z after pressing Shift!

Start simulation, press Shift once, hold X to release the pin and accelerate.
You can let go of X to fly at a normal speed, since you will cross the map in no time if you just hold X.

Controls
  • TFGH – Pitch and Roll
  • Shift/Ctrl - Start engine forward/backwards
  • X/Z - Thrust forward/backwards (WARNING: FAST)
  • Q - Camera for racing

In the video: First run/race isn't sped up, because of camera movements. The other runs are sped up to be realtime (100%).

Times:

Valley of Titans (Vanlombardi): 01:26.46 3rd overall, 1st vanilla
Champion's Canyon (Brammer001, Six): 00:26:81 1st
Valley of Queens (Shadé): 00:19:31 5th Overall, 1st vanilla
Valley of Kings (Shadé): 00:17:47 3rd vanilla

No gyros (reaction wheels):
ISEV (Shadé): 00:32:60 3rd overall, 1st vanilla

At 100% speed:
Neo Albion: 02:37:58
By VermilionBoulderIndividual, Shadé. The best/only time at 100% speed. Best vanilla overall (?)

In the video you see an old mod, before mods were integrated on the steam workshop.
MaxTCC made a new version, though, you can find it if you search "speedometer mod" on the workshop!
You could also use CustomScenes, which allows for big custom maps in singleplayer, but that's a hassle to install. If you're adamant on getting that, I'd advise visiting the discord: discord.gg/Besiege

What do you use to test your speed?

Then that's why. I am in 0.45a. I never updated because mods didn't work for a while.

Weird. I set the spinning blocks to 0.1 acceleration, they act like sturdier swivel joints if you do that. If you use pre-Multiverse you need to swap them out, but they should work fine in the current version.

Thanks for letting me know, if anyone else has that issue (in the latest, non-experimental besiege version) please let me know and I'll update it to replace the spinning blocks with swivels, and the back wheels with an unpowered one.

I fixed it. I don't know why it worked for your video and not me. I replaced the spinning block closest to the rear with a swivel joint and just as i expected that made it stable.

How do you keep it stable when the engines are on? When I activate the engines it is fast but uncontrollable because of the spinning.

Thanks Ross! I'm glad to see you still active in Besiege. I'm afraid I've been inactive for too long.
Are you going to try your hand at air racing with more than 6 blocks? ;)

Not only does it go fast, it also has plenty of lift for gliding and it controls well at low speeds. Definitely a fun and unique plane! :steamhappy:
