Description
Era - 1910s / 1920s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Harry Wills should have had a fight for Jack Dempsey's Heavyweight title. He was a top contender for years, beating other top heavyweights along the way. He won what was called the World Colored Heavyweight title and defended the title honorably. Wills had an endless series with the great Sam Langford, facing him an unthinkable eighteen times. He won a newspaper poll at one point as the favorite challenger the public wanted to see Dempsey face. He could punch from the outside and had a mauling inside game, able to land short hard punches out of the break. Wills should have fought for the World title.

But it was not meant to be.

Time and time again, Harry Wills was denied his shot at the top, and there are as many stories and reasons cited as there were fights in his career. Tex Rickard, promoter of Jack Dempsey, was said to have had reservations about promoting a fight between a black and a white fighter after having seen riots follow the Jack Johnson vs. James J. Jeffries fight of 1910, which he had promoted. There were rumors that members of the US government at various levels could have wanted to prevent such a fight, too. Finally, financial reasons may have kept the fight from happening in 1926, with Dempsey's check bouncing before the fight happened.
