Description
Era - 1880s / 1890s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Born in the Danish West Indies, Peter Jackson moved to Australia, where he would gain a solid education, become a seaman by trade, and most importantly, learned how to box. Jackson soon became the Australian Heavyweight champion, his natural skills accentuated by a statuesque physique and a refined intellect. Well read, the man known as the Black Prince was known for studying Shakespeare and other writers when he wasn't in the midst of revolutionizing the art of fistic struggle.

Jackson was as ducked as he was admired, with John L. Sullivan steadfastly avoiding a fight with him. While Sullivan avoided Jackson, James J. Corbett did not, and the two engaged in an epic sixty one round fight that resulted in a no contest draw, neither fighter having anything left to continue with.

Such was Jackson's high regard in contemporary Black America that Frederick Douglass kept a picture of him in his office, and many saw him as a symbol of a better future. He even appeared in an American theatre play in the lead role of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and would perform exhibition bouts before each production.
