Description
Era - 1860s / 1880s - Boxing - Middleweight

One of the most influential boxers in history, Jem Mace was the grandfather of gloved boxing and what would evolve into a modern technical style.

Born in England, Mace became a boxer when a group of miscreants ruined his violin, giving him cause to fight. He would travel the world as a pugilist, setting up an important school in Australia that would bequeath the likes of Peter Jackson and Bob Fitzsimmons to the boxing community. Mace won titles in England and America, and would give exhibitions into his late 70s.
