Era - 1980s - WWF / NWA / AWA

The drill instructor from Parris Island was a major player in the 1980s across the three major American companies. In the early 80s, Slaughter was managed by the Grand Wizard, and was seen as a menacing buffoon who received "Gomer" chants, referring to the comedic military man, Gomer Pyle. He feuded with Pat Patterson, and the two waged war in a New York Alley Fight at Madison Square Garden, a bloody brawl that set the standard for bloody brawls for years to come.

Slaughter would jump to the NWA in 1981, winning the NWA United States and tag titles, before going back to the WWF in 1983, where he would eventually become a massive fan favorite, and would be immortalized as a toy in the G.I. Joe line. A successful, if goldless AWA run would follow, before he would eventually come back to the WWF...but that's a whole other story.
