Description
Era - 1920s / 1930s - Boxing - Heavyweight

The legend of James J. Braddock is one of perseverence, of a man who took everything life threw at him and managed to stand tall regardless.

Braddock rose through the ranks in the '20s, eventually winning a shot at Tommy Loughran's Light Heavyweight title, and was thoroughly outboxed. A decent counter puncher with a big right hand, Braddock made another run for the LHW title, but again lost to another master boxer, Maxie Rosenbloom, a loss that by itself was tough, but combined with the stock market crash and repeated injuries to Braddock's right hand, became devistating. Working on the docks to provide for his family and losing in a long series of short notice fights against nobodies, it seemed that his career had taken an inescapable route to obscurity.

However, in 1934, an opportunity of a lifetime would reveal itself. Madison Square Garden's promoters were looking for a short notice oppponent for Corn Griffin, who was seen as a rising prospect. Braddock was contacted and accepted the fight. He managed to pull off a third round knockout against the favorite, and went on to win two more fights before being matched up against the Heavyweight Champion of the world, Max Baer.

Now called the Cinderella Man by famed sportswriter Damon Runyon, Braddock faced off against Baer in 1935, a clear cut underdog against the athletic, heavy handed Baer. While many would have been intimidated by one of the hardest punchers in boxing history, Braddock had faced enough adversity in his life to be beyond intimidation for this moment, and ended up outboxing Baer to a unanimous decision. He would then go on to duck Max Schmeling and lose his title to Joe Louis, but the victory achieved against Baer would live in immortality, eventually brought back to public attention by the 2005 film, Cinderella Man, starring Russell Crowe.
