A cultural icon in his native Mexico, transcending the sport of boxing, Julio Cesar Chavez was a true phenomenon inside the ring as well, his title reigns in three weight classes each lasting years, his fights defining an era and rallying a nation.

Chavez was victorious for eighty seven straight fights from the beginning of his career. While some would criticize some of his earlier foes as undermatched, and one of these fights would be a controvercial disqualification that was retroactively changed to a win, Chavez's ferocity and brutal body punching would not be questioned.

His list of noted opponents ran long enough to silence any doubters, with Roger Mayweather, Rocky Lockridge and Edwin Rosario all notches on Chavez's belt. JCC's greatness would be further revealed in a war with Meldrick Taylor, who came into the fight as an unbeaten Light Welter champion, but after a stoppage, literally in the last two seconds of the bout, Chavez would emerge as the champion. Another big win over Hector "Macho" Camacho and a record attendence of 132,274 fans at the Estadio Azteca for a win over Greg Haugen kept the legend alive.

The winning streak would finally come to a close in 1993, in a majority draw with the elusive Pernell Whitaker. Whitaker, by the opinion of most fans and pundits, was the clear cut victor, despite the judges' decision.
