Era - 1880s

William Muldoon was a foundational figure in the formation of American sporting culture, across various sports. An early American champion, Muldoon dominanted the World Greco-Roman championship, known for his aggressive style and ability to gain victory not just by pinfall, but by knocking opponents out or making them quit with his brutal throws. Muldoon also was formative in the world of boxing, training a horridly out of shape John L. Sullivan in 1889 for his fight with Jake Kilrain, and successfully whipping him back into fighting condition.

Muldoon ran his own health and workout center, created his own system of workout plans, appeared in theatre productions and became the first New York State Athletic Comissioner, all in all, a well rounded set of accomplishments.
