Description

One of the major cities in Mindanao that is the regional center of the Northern Mindanao region, also the capital of Misamis Oriental: Cagayan de Oro City

The main and central core of Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro, which used to be an metropolitan area until 2017 but development on it remains ongoing.

Originally known as 'Cagayan de Misamis', it was renamed to Cagayan de Oro when it was converted into an component city of Misamis Oriental in 1950.

Also known by its nickname 'City of Golden Friendship', the city also attracts tourists due to popular tourism activites along Cagayan de Oro River.

Due to its location along the Cagayan de Oro River, plus the city's flat terrain, the city is often submerged by flood water during tropical cyclones such as what happened during the 2011 and 2017 Pacific typhoon seasons.

Second Improved Philippine City reached the building limit, after Improved Metro Manila.

With an population of 450,000, it is also the largest Improved Philippine City in terms of population, beating Improved Metro Cebu's population of 320,000.

Major improvements focused on infrastructure and public transport such as the Cagayan de Oro MRT system, PNR Mindanao Commuter Line, PNR Cagayan de Oro-Zamboanga Line, PNR Cagayan de Oro-Surigao Line, new major thoroughfares, Port of Cagayan de Oro expansion, Cagayan River Ferry Service, expansion of Cagayan de Oro International Airport, along with the beautification and redevelopment of several districts such as Downtown Cagayan de Oro, Old City Proper, Limketkai Business Park, New Cagayan de Oro City Proper, and South Cagayan de Oro Park.

Like with most cities already featured in the Improved Philippine Cities series, all existing major thoroughfares are renamed from their current names (such as Claro M. Recto Avenue into Lily Pelaez Avenue) for easy navigation reasons, excluded ones are expressways and national highways only such as Maharlika Highway.
