Description
Era - Pioneer (1890s)

An enigmatic figure in the early days of professional wrestling, and perhaps the first "foriegn monster heel" in the sport, Youssouf Ishmaelo terrified fans and opponents alike.

The history of Ishmaelo is complex, to put it mildly. Born in Bulgaria, thought by some to have been a French dock worker, and also known by the name of Yusuf Ismael, the man the world would come to know as the Terrible Turk was said to have made his name in Turkey within the Ottoman Empire, before traveling westward. He destroyed a number of foes in France before 1898, when he went to the United States, causing a stir with his strongman antics and violent matches.

Ishmaelo's most infamous showing came against World Champion Ernst Roeber, facing him at the original Madison Square Garden. The Terrible Turk did not waste time trying to test Roeber's technical skills, and instead shoved his opponent off the unroped ring. Roeber tumbled into the crowd and was knocked unconcious, with Ishmaelo receiving a disqualification, and starting a near-riot within the angry crowd.

A rematch would again result in a roughousing affair, and a no-contest, and Ishamelo would go on to defeat a number of other opponents, including George Heraklides, a Greek strongman and Evan "Strangler" Lewis, nullifying the Original Strangler's signature hold and skill with his own size.
