To maintain steam pressure on the first incline, open the dampers (just to the right of a bucket on the floor). Start with cutoff at 75% and accelerate gently to about 7mph, then almost close the regulator to allow the cutoff to be reduced to 25%, and then open the regulator to full again. You should be able to maintain about 10mph, using sand when required.
The train has virtually no braking. Setting the cutoff to -25% and opening the regulator gently will gradually slow the train, and you can use the brake on the guard's van to provide a little extra deceleration, which was its function in real life.
Close the dampers 3-4 miles before the first stop and you may retain enough water to get to the end, but I cheated and filled up at one of the passing loops.
Keep trying - it is really worth it!
Got up the hill at an average of 6 - 10 mph. Once on the flatten section, average speed 28 mph.
However you really have to check you speed as you pull into the first stop to hook up with the engine. Was going to fast, tried to brake, reverse,,,,well better brace for impact.....
POWW....hit the engine at about 20 mph...derailed.
Gotta learn how to use the steam break better.....
This scenario teaches you how to use the J94 with no aids if you want to maximize the route.
Well played sir.
The first train passes within 30 seconds or so, but the light still is red. Is there a second train? I have waited 10 minutes and nothing.
Anyway, once I do go, I go very slow. Average 0.5 mph. Although I am using auto fireman, how do you get this train moving faster. Is the slow speed due to the grade?
What are the tricks to increasing your speed if I do the fireman duties myself.
Can you use auto fireman here?
