Sváfnir - Snake Clan Guide [out of date]
By Stealthy Jeffrey and 1 collaborators
Hello Northgardians! =)
This is a very detailed guide to the snake clan, which explains the build order, what to do in the different game stages, how to use the sly features of the snake and much more! :)
You can use the index to jump to your personal topic of interest.

Introduction
This faction has become one of my favourite clans very quickly. The clan of the snake is quiet young and this guide as well. If you have any suggestions and ideas to improve it, feel free to share your thoughts! :)

Furthermore I want to say thank you to my mate Ryu Hayabusa for testing the combat between warriors with the buff of "Weaponsmith" and skirmishers with the buff of "Under Pressure". :)
Another "Thank you!" goes to my friend that is added as a contributor (writing his name makes no sense because he is chaning it so often :P) and the Youtuber and Northgard player "TheCrazyDentist" because the "Snake Rush" strategy was their idea and not mine. :D
Clan Mentality - Does snake fit your playstyle?
You will probably enjoy this clan if...
  • ...you prefer to have a constant, balanced performance in all game stages.
  • ...your strategies and tactics are the definition of deceit, stealth and surprise attacks.
  • ...you prioritize mobility over durability and warband size over unit strength.
  • ...you enjoy well timed attacks and timing in general as a key component for military success.
  • ...you like to heavily adapt your tactics and strategies according to the hostile clan choices.
  • ...you prefer domination victory.

You will probably NOT like the clan if you want to focus on any other victory condition than domination.
GENERAL STRATEGY (recommended vs. all clans except raven)
Build Order
Of course the build order can vary according to the stiuation you are facing but in general the following is a good way to go for:

1. scout camp in the start area
2. house in the start area

----- colonize a second area (try to leave one food area for later) -----

3. woodcutter's lodge next to the start area
4. normal training camp in the start area

----- colonize a food area -----

5. food building that fits your food area (farm, hunter hut or fisher hut)
6. second house in the area with the woodcutter's lodge
7. longship dock in the start area
8. silo into food area

----- colonize more areas for space, fame and happiness -----

9. second woodcutter's lodge (try to prioritize forest areas)
10. second longship dock if you have enough coasts, otherwise trading post
12. add more military camps (with the focus on skirmisher camps) and houses
--> do not build too much houses, make sure you can keep your growing population happy
--> you should have at least 10 military camps at the end
13. when your food production gets high enough, build a trading post

Furthermore you should build a healer's hut. However, the perfect moment for it varies drastically. You should build it when signy is hurt to a significant degree.
Lore

This is just a suggestion. The most effective path may vary according to the situation.

I recommend to rush for "Field Rations" offered by "Stolen Lore" immediately after picking up "Trading" at the start because it will synergize very well with "Under Pressure" and compensate your economic weakness. Furthermore the lesser maintenance costs of your army will allow you to recruit much more armed forces, which may result in a military advantage when you combat your foes.

At next I usually go for "Black Market" because at this time the economy should be capable of opening trade routes and of the supply of the population at the same time and the additional money income will be essential to get a very big warband.

It is not such a big problem to delay your military skills for this strategy because a few of snake's abilities of this lore chapter are not that useful before the late game. Signy starts as a very weak unit but she becomes extremely powerful in year 803. So the skill "Legendary Heroes" will not have a lot of impact in the early stages. "Guerilla Tactics" may grant your units an incredible 40% damage buff. However, the killing of 20 civilians in total is required to achieve it. It is very unlikely that you manage to own a lot of stacks for this ability in the early stages. Furhtermore you can collect stacks before you unlock the skill, it simply does not increase your damage. Therefore you should pick it up in the later stages of the game when you probably have some stacks stored.

* Under Pressure:
Go for this one before you start experiencing happiness problems. I often find myself going for it after "Colonization".
Game Stages
Early Game - year 800 and 801

In this game stage you should usually focus on completing your building process and getting a strong economy. If you need some help with that, check out the "Build Order" section of this guide. I recommend getting two scouts at the start to explore all areas next to your town hall and then returning one scout back into a villager to get a better economy. After getting the first training camp it is a good idea to get two warriors to clear nearby areas to make sure you won't get attacked. Warriors are more useful for the early clearing process because your skirmishers are more fragile and do not have the damage buff of "Under Pressure" at this time. Furthermore you can prevent attacks from wolf caves and draugr tombs without capturing them by keeping Signy there after you cleared the tile. No enemies can spawn from it as long as a military unit is standing inside the tile. After you ensured the safety of your clan you really should return not hurt warriors into villagers to improve your economy. Make sure to get a loremaster, too (if the map allows it). Wounded soldiers should always be fighting until they are dead if you do not have a healer's hut yet. You will probably get "Under Pressure" in year 801. This ability may help you a lot in terms of happiness. If you need more information about how to use it, check out the section "Special Abilities". At the beginning of spring 801 Signy will reach Age 16 and "Pride of the Clan" will be activated. From this point Signy will be a ranged unit with 20% bonus speed. You can abuse her new strengths to clear tiles with lots of draugr as long as there are not any draugr with spears because Signy can kite them. As mentioned in the "Build Order" section you will not mine stone and iron with the strategy provided by this guide. Your focus should be to get a lot of military buildings, at least ten.

Mid Game - year 802

You should get "Jörd's Blessing" in this game stage. Use its stone to upgrade your town hall and your scout camp if you need it. The iron should be used to improve the tools of your skirmishers. It will improve their damage and enable them to poison enemies, which seems to slow their movement speed. Therfore this debuff is especially useful to take down key targets like a warchief. Furthermore you will probably unlock "Black Market" in year 802 to get huge amounts of crowns by trading with enemies. Try to build more military camps if you do not yet have ten and always focus on skirmisher camps.

Late Game - year 803 and later

If you sticked to the plans proposed by this guide you should reach a maximum warband size of at least 20 and have at least 1350 crowns, which allows you to recruit an army of 20 skirmishers headed by Signy. Furthermore in spring 803 Signy gets 18 years old, "Tears of the Earth" will come up and Signy will learn "Scorched Earth" to improve your military impact even more. If you need information about how to use this ability, check out the section "Special Abilities". You will also start to unlock more military lore perks. "Guerilla Tactics" and "Legendary Heroes" can buff the damage output of your army by huge amounts (especially if the game is going well). So to summarize it in one sentence: You should try to win by domination now.

Additional information:
Sváfnir's army is extremely powerful during all game stages, so you definitely do not have to wait until late game for an attack. If you can get enough vision for a domination victory in the earlier years, early suprise attacks may completely destroy your enemy. Raven can be a very useful ally to realize tactics of this kind thanks to its superior scouting abilities.

SNAKE RUSH (only recommended vs. raven)
Build Order
Of course the build order can vary according to the stiuation you are facing but in general the following is a good way to go for:

1. scout camp in the start area
2. woodcutter's lodge in the start area
3. house in the start area

----- colonize a a tile with stone as second area -----

4. stone mine next to the start area
5. harbor in the start area
6. second house in the area with the stone mine

----- colonize a third area -----

7. second woodcutter's lodge
8. military camps (skimisher camps have the priority)

----- colonize a fourth area -----

9. even more military camps
--> you should have at least 6 military camps at the end

It makes sense to keep the fact in mind that you may have to switch to the general strategy mentioned above if the rush won't be enough to eliminate all enemies. So leaving enough space for food production buildings or a second harbor could be very useful.
Lore

There is not that much to be write here because your goal in terms of lore lies in picking up only four abilities before you execute the attack during the winter at the end of year 801. If it isn't enough to finish your enemies, you should switch to the more late game orientated "General Strategy" that can be found above. "Trading" and "Ship Building" will enable you to earn enough money until that point in time. "Under Pressure" and "Fur Coats" on the other hand sould be picked up to improve the potential of your early game army and to keep your population happy.
Game Stages
Early Game - year 800 and 801

The "Snake Rush" completele focuses on this game stage. Just colonize four areas and do all necessary things to start a powerful attack during the second winter. If you are ready for it before that time has come, waiting until winter can still be the better option because the lore ability "Fur Coats" could give you advantage above the enemy. Your economy will be weak and only strong enough to execute an early rush. However, your military impact during the early stages is much better than with the "General Strategy", which focuses more on late game atacks.

Mid Game & Late game - year 802 and later

The weak economy and also the military impact reached with this strategy will fall off in the later game stages. For that reason you should follow the "General Strategy" that got explained earlier in this guide if you could not completely destroy your enemies with your rush in the second winter. Don't worry, very often you have enough time to transition your gameplay into other tactics and strategies because the raven will need some time to become very threatening, especially after you destroyed its early game economy by killing civilians, taking territories and eventually denying several buildings.
INFORMATION FOR BOTH STRATEGIES
Military Path

I really prefer the "Tactician" path over the "Conqueror" way. In my opinion the advantages given by "Tactician" have much more impact because the free military lore from "Conqueror" won't make a big difference in longer games and the buffs of "Blood Bath" only appear AFTER you have lost any forces. Guardian is usually not very useful for a snake because you want to be very aggressive at some point to use the military potential of this clan to its full potential. Furthermore "Tactian" offers great synergies with snake's gameplay. Signy is extremely important and very powerful, so it is a good idea to buff her by adding a "Bodyguard". The "Warcry" ability will make it much easier to use "Scorched Earth" because it can compensate the long cast time.
Special Abilities
Guerilla Tactics
If the game is going well and long enough, you may manage to receive a lot of stacks for this ability resulting in a huge damage buff. Surprise Attacks may allow you to kill a few civilians before your enemy reacts. Furthermore you should not retreat as soon as you have defeated a foe because his /her civilians will not despawn and that is why you can abuse them to gather more stacks for "Guerilla Tactics".

Scorched Earth
This ability improves your military performance by a lot in the late game. It can be used offensively or defensively. However, the production debuff it causes in the selected area is the big reason why you should prefer the first possibility. "Scorched Earth" has a cast time, so performing a surprise attack is recommended to make sure that your enemy reacts too late to interrupt this skill. You may also try to distract your enemies by attacking another tile with skirmishers at the same time when signy is using her special ability. The production debuff allows you to use the ability for devastating economic sabotages on food tiles and areas with woodcutter's lodges as well.

Under Pressure
Using this skill costs you more food than it will produce before u unlocked field rations. The reason why you should use it though is its happiness bonus. You should start camping next to hostile areas when the happiness value reaches zero or less to keep your population growing. Furthermore this skill is very easy to counter as enemy. If your enemy is paying attention to the tiles next to her/his borders, he/she can wipe out your skirmishers quickly to deny the happiness bonus. So it may be a good idea to hide your units behind some LOS (line of sight) blockers like trees. Two examples are shown below. It will not hide your skirmishers completely, your enemies may still see a red shimmer where they are standing but it is at least harder to notice.

Furthermore you should camp in areas where neutral enemies are to force fights between them and hostile armies if enemies check for camping skirmishers. Always camp in the most dangerous area next to your foe. Another important thing is that you should react fast when skirmishers get revealed and attacked to move your units back and keep them alive. I recommend the creation of control groups to select the camping units as fast as possible.
Army Composition
Going completely for skirmishers is my advice here. There are three reasons:
  1. As Sváfnir you do not have the skill "Military Strategy" because it is replaced by "Guerilla Tactics" so you do not need to mix all unit types to maximize your damage.
  2. "Under Pressure" replaces "Weaponsmith" and therefore only your skirmishers will get 20% bonus damage. So all your other units will have a 20% damage disadvantage versus hostile armed forces with the buff of "Weaponsmith".
  3. Your skirmishers simply form the best synergy with Signy because both unit types have stealth, which allows to move through areas with neutral enemies without fighting. Keep in mind that Signy has to reach her highest level (in spring 803) to become a stealth unit.
Conclusion

Hi! :)
I just started playing Northgard again. :D
However, I only play Kraken and Dragon at the moment and maybe I will get back to Raven. So, Snake is not really my style anymore. Furthermore I don't think that I want to put that much time into writing guides anymore and there are people out there who can simply give a much better advice than me, la baguette du game on YouTube for example. :)

Hey! Any update on this? :)
Stealthy Jeffrey  [author] 12 Jul, 2019 @ 8:46am
Hey there! =)
At first I want to say sorry for the late answer. There is a significant probability that I will update my guides when I get back into Northgard at some point in the future. However, I can't promise it and I also don't know when it would happen. At the moment I am just not really in the mood for Northgard, sorry. :c

Hey bro! Can you apdate guide? :)
Stealthy Jeffrey  [author] 26 Apr, 2019 @ 4:23am
You are still losing resources but they don't get anything from it. :D
Onion 25 Apr, 2019 @ 3:16pm
I've got a question about the black market lore. It says i can trade with enemies and they won't receive any resources and I gain extra money from the trade route however, when I trade with an enemy it still shows -6 for outgoing trade. Am I not doing something or am I just losing that food or wood and they just get nothing?
Stealthy Jeffrey  [author] 20 Jan, 2019 @ 2:51pm
Maybe I should give it a try! :)
I never thought that "Journeymen" could be as useful as "Field Rations" but maybe I underestimated it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! (:
Mortal 19 Jan, 2019 @ 2:12am
I always find it difficult to choose between field rations and a journeymen. As for me, "Journeymen" gives a great advantage in the recruitment of soldiers, of course, this is very important if there are plenty of food around.
Stealthy Jeffrey  [author] 15 Jan, 2019 @ 2:20am
That‘s weird. I am pretty sure that it worked for me in the past. 🤔

Yeah I know, I've done so before with other clans, but the Bodyguard didn't spawn with Signy. Must have been a bug then.
