Description
"The Father of Puroresu" Rikidōzan was the biggest star in Japanese professional wrestling throughout the 1950's and until his untimely death in 1963.

Rikidōzan, the former sumo wrestler, transitioned to pro wrestling in 1951 and founded the the Japanese Wrestling Association. He would became its biggest star quickly. Rikidōzan held the All Asia Heavyweight Championship from 1955 until he died, in addition to holding the All Asia Tag Team Championships with Toyonobori four times for a combined reign of over three years. Rikidōzan also defeated Lou Thesz in 1958 to win the NWA International Heavyweight Championship, another title that was held on to until his passing.

Beyond Rikidōzan's own wrestling accomplishments, some of his students went on to become legends in their own right - Antonio Inoki and Shohei Baba trained under Rikidōzan and became huge stars in the JWA before leaving to form NJPW and AJPW, respectively.

Rikidōzan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.
