A-90 Orlyonok

As celebration of my 100th upload, I built the plane displayed on my banner.

The A-90 Orlyonok, meaning Eagle, is a Soviet era ground effect vehicle, meaning it could not fly more than a few meters above the surface, because it could only fly in ground effect. Developed in the 70s, the Orlyonok was one of several Ekranoplan’s designed by R. E. Alexeyev. One of its most notable features was its oddly placed turboprop engine, the most powerful one ever built. This turboprop is not the only source of power. There are two jet engines placed in the nose that push air under the wings to assist the vehicle in getting in the air. The Orlyonok was a transport vehicle, designed to be able to take off on land and on water. The front of the vehicle was a large door, that swung open to allow vehicles and men to enter.

Developer’s Notes (IMPORTANT)

- Although an Ekranoplan, this replica can fly through the air like a true plane, so to maintain realism, stay close to the ground when flying
- The pitch and roll are very weak, and it is recommended that you use yaw for turning.
- Though the original design had a hinged door to load cargo, this feature was removed after difficulty with the hinges
