Description
A legendary wrestler who began his career in All Japan Pro Wrestling in 1992, after being scouted by Giant Baba. He made his debut in September of that year. While he failed to capture the Triple Crown in his original run, he enjoyed great success in tag competition, beginning with his partnership with Takao Omori (who would later form the team NO FEAR with Yoshihiro Takayama).

When Mitsuharu Misawa formed Pro Wrestling NOAH, Akiyama played a role more important than ever before. It was in NOAH where Akiyama achieved his biggest singles accomplishment up to that point, winning the GHC Heavyweight Championship by defeating Mitsuharu Misawa. His first reign lasted 254 days, ending on his 4th defense, a match against Yoshinari Ogawa on April 7, 2002.

In 2003, Akiyama's phenomenal performance as a freelancer in the G1 Climax elevated him even further in the history books, with great matches against such names as Masahiro Chono, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, and a young Hiroshi Tanahashi. He made it all the way to the finals, but was defeated by Tenzan, a man he had defeated earlier in the tournament.

In April 2011, Akiyama reappeared in AJPW, representing Pro Wrestling NOAH in the Champion Carnival. In October, he became Triple Crown Champion for the first time in his career, defeating Suwama and going on to defend the title 4 times. In 2012, he left NOAH, becoming a freelancer.

2013 marked Akiyama winning his first Champion Carnival, defeating KAI in the finals. 2013 was also the year when Akiyama became an official member of the AJPW roster for the first time in 13 years.

Since then, Akiyama has enjoyed success both in the ring and out. He held the Triple Crown Championship one more time after his initial reign, defeating Akebono in 2015. However, he lost quickly and without any successful defenses, in a match against the man who he defeated for his first Triple Crown Championship, Suwama. Recent achievements include an eventful Gaora TV Championship reign and an Asia Tag Team Championships reign, where Akiyama teamed with NJPW mainstay Yuji Nagata. Even at age 49, Akiyama is still one of the best workers out there.

Outside the ring, Akiyama is currently president and co-head booker of All Japan Pro Wrestling in a time where they are quickly returning to prominence.
