Description
Arianespace Vega flight VV12[www.arianespace.com] of the 22 August 2018 with Aeolus, world's first spacecraft capable of measuring wind from space.

Warning: Requires Kerbal Space Program: Making History Expansion

Launch instructions
Aeolus aims at Sun-Synchronus orbit, separating at aphelion of around 320km, inclination 96.7°.

Enable SAS ([r]), space to launch, wait till first stage (P80) burns out, space to seperate, wait till atmospheric effects dissapear and slowly rotate rocket towards North-North-West (orbital inclination should be 96.7°, if you loose control - either you tried to rotate too quickly or you begun maneuver too early), space again to ignite second stage (Zefiro-23), once it burns out again: space to seperate, and again: space to ignite final solid stage (Zefiro-9). Once this is done - stage, ignite liquid stage (AVUM) to reach desired altitude and inclination, Periapsis should be just above the surface of the planet. Once this is accomplished - [x] to shut the engine, [space] to stage, switch to Aeolus (right [[] and left []] square brackets switch between next/previous nearest active ship), press [1] to deploy solar panels. Then back again to AVUM, rotate it retrograde, ignite engines [z] to deorbit. Once Aeolus gets near the Apoapsis use RCS thrusters to circulize orbit ([h] for forward).

Simplifications
  • KSP does not offer gimballed solid rocket boosters
  • There is no large solid boosters, therefore combination of small boosters with reduced amount of fuel was used
  • There is no appropriately sized equivalent of ALADIN lidar and Atmospheric Fluid Spectro-Variometer works only in the atmosphere, therefore GRAVMAX Negative Gravioli Detector was used as a replacement
  • Note that in KSP it's not efficient to separate fairing during the 3rd stage burn, however it was kept for the sake of realism. If you'd like to earn some Δv you can move fairing separation to after the ignition of the second stage.
