Dagestan is the most religious, populous and complex of all the north Caucasian republics. It is double the size of Chechnya and consists of several dozen ethnic groups, most with their own language. The conflict in Dagestan, however, is not between ethnic groups but between Sufism, and Salafism.

Dagestan has the highest levels of extremist violence of the North Caucasus republics. The Russian Interior Ministry stated that of the 399 terrorist crimes committed in the North Caucasus in 2013, 242 were in Dagestan. The security forces of the Russian Federation, both police and special operations units of the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Ministry of the Interior (MVD), have carried out counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the Republic of Dagestan for years.

Take the command of one of the two section-sized groups of FSB 'Alpha' special operations forces in a coordinated assault to the last stronghold of the Vilayat Dagestan (branch of the Caucasus Emirate) in the valley, with the previous help of an attack helicopter, and secure the area.
