Description
Replica of the Arianespace Soyuz with restartable Fregat upper stage. Launch Vehicle is empty, ready to take payload of any kind. Launcher requires Making History Expansion. It's also campagin-ready, using minimum amount of parts to replicate launcher. It's also capable of reaching orbit with RSS (RealSolarSystem). Staging sequence is exactly as in real life, including support arms release after the ignition of the engines.

One fun fact about launching this in vanilla KSP is that Fregat alone, without any payload, has enough thurst to reach interstellar velocity!

Launch instructions
  1. [T] to enable SAS [Z] set engine to full trottle
  2. [Space] to ignite engines, [space] again to release the launcher
  3. Slowly begin turn, as launcher raises in the atmosphere
  4. [space] to drop boosters once they run out of fuel
  5. [space] again to release fairing once you exit the atmosphere
  6. remember to observe map, once you reach 70+km you can can cut the engines and coast, this will happen at different points dependign on payload (might be while main stage is still running, might be after the separation)
  7. once main stage runs out of fuel - seperate, press [R] to enable RCS, ignite engine. Note that without RCS 3rd stage can be uncontrolable, and there's no point enabling RCS while the 1st and 2nd stages are ignited as the 2nd stage thrusters already provide enough control.
  8. Stage to release Fregat. Space to ignite S5.92 (LV-909)
  9. Space again to release your payload. Then rotate backwards, gently turn on the engine (not to damage or push the payload away) and safely deorbit (just like Vega, Soyuz also deorbits its upper stage not to leave any debris).

Simplifications
Of course KSP doesn't support everything real rocket had, therefore few simplifications had been made for the sake of the gameplay:

  • There is no equivalent of the RD-0124, high-ISP vaccum-optimized 4-chamber engine. Therefore RK-7 is used as a replacement
  • Real Fregat contains 4 fuel spheres and 2 avionics. There are no small spherical control modules, therefore upper stage uses Probodobodyne OKTO in location where real Fregat was and LV909 attached beneath it. It's also missing 4 RCS thrusters, as there are no RCS fuel tanks anywhere near the tiny size required to replicate them, and LV909 already provides more than sufficient amount of control.
  • Korolev Cross isn't anywhere near as beautiful as it is in real life...
  • Soyuz looks largely white on a photographs and videos from launches because of all the frost that covers it from the water vapor in the atmosphere. Launcher itself is painted gray-white-orange

Kerbal Engineer
  • Delta-V: 8 019 m/s (stages: 1941m/s, 1106m/s, 3248m/s, 1725m/s)
  • Mass: 71 114 kg
  • Cost: √47 946.7

It doesn't require any mods, but you have to have the Making History Expansion.
