About

Comparison Shot of Hanzo's Shadows (left) and Scopes Ninja Hero (right)

With the general release of the Hattori clan DLC to the masses back in 2011, I was inspired to create a unique ninja hero unit, there were no similar mods and this predated the Saints and Heroes DLC pack of 2012 (which conveniently had The Hanzo's Shadows, a unit so close to my original mod that it could easily be a clone!)

My intention was to enhance the Hattori experience, as it was lacking in the Ninja units despite its selling point being that it is the clan which specialises in their use. Ninja were one of the only unit archetypes not to have a Hero unit at that time and it seemed the perfect idea.

This mod was originally meant for personal use, but it had good reviews and gradually expanded to the Tokugawa in early 2012 (to give those without the Hattori DLC a piece of the action), and as of V3.0 adds a FotS Ninja Hero unit The Shinobi Hero.

DO NOT BE PUT OFF IF YOU OWN SAINTS AND HEROES DLC.

This mod predates Hanzo's Shadows and it is not a clone, it brings unique abilities and skins absent in that unit.

While other Sengoku Jidai armies can still recruit the Hanzo's Shadows unit - The Hattori and Tokugawa Clans have their own distinct Ninja Hero Unit instead; with custom faction skins created in Photoshop with full bumpmap and specular support - based on the awesome FOTS Ninja officer unit model.
With custom skill, a grenade throw much farther than other Ninja Unit's which allow for long range attacks without breaking stealth, Campaign map stealth allowing for easy ambushing, resistance to attrition, and the Tokugawa unit's ability to instill obedience through garrison suppression in disloyal provinces makes this...MUCH MORE THAN JUST A STAT REWORK!

The Hattori Ninja Hero

The Hattori Ninja Hero is the more aggresive of the two Sengoku era units, Its warriors are in peak condition, and represent the best the Iga-Sokoku-Ikki have to offer from its clans. It can hide easier and for longer than normal kisho ninja due to it's mastery of Shinobi-iri (the art of moving unseen). Combined with its ability to throw its devastating (yet limited), supply of firebombs much further than lesser ninja - you have a guerilla unit capable hit and run attacks that can shake the morale of the most battle hardened samurai. They are no pushover in Melee Either! With an increased attack power, and powerful charge, they can also use the Warcry ability to strike fear in the hearts of lesser men. Being masters of Wilderness Survival, they also have campaign map stealth (Similar to the Ninja Agent), and are immune to attrition.

Unlike the Hanzo's Shadows which need a Legendary Mizu Shobai district to recruit, The Hattori have direct access to the most veteran ninja through their shinobi clan ties - This Hero unit may be recruited from a Level 3 Stealth Building Criminal Syndicate allowing for much earlier access.

The Tokugawa Ninja Hero

Tokugawa Ieyasu's use of ninja during the Sengoku period is as renowned as that of Hattori Hanzo.
It should come at no small surprise that Hanzo was actually a personal friend and adviser to the man who would become the future military leader of Japan, and is said to have sent many Ninja into the service of the Tokugawa clan.

The Tokugawa Ninja Hero is the Tokugawa Daimyo's Personal Bodyguard and enforcers of his will; acting as his eyes, ears and more often than not - executioners. Ieyasu's famed use of these phantoms caused fear not only in rival clans, but among threats closer to home. The threat of being eliminated for treacherous deeds is a very real prospect to those subservient to the Tokugawa, therefore any settlements where the Ninja Hero makes his presence felt will be granted a policing bonus to public order. This aura of obedience and compliance extends to the soldiery in the Daimyo's service, and in battle the Ninja Hero can call upon the Hold Firm ability, inspiring allies to stand thier ground in the face of overwhelming odds. The trade-off for this unique ability is that the Tokugawa Ninja Hero is not quite as powerful in melee as thier Hattori counterpart, however they are still a worthy hero in close combat and a higher melee defence means that they may outlast other hero units. They too share the other perks of the Hattori Ninja Hero - Campaign map stealth, Immunity to attrition, reduced detection range, and an increased firebomb range of 75 yards that can be thrown whilst hidden.

The Tokugawa's close ties to the clans of Iga and Koga, means that they too can recruit this hero unit early by building the Level 3 Stealth Building Criminal Syndicate.

The Shinobi Hero

By the time of the 19th century, Ninja had become the legends of common folklore and mysticism. Over embellished tales of supernaturaly powered espionage agents who can become invisible, or leap tall buildings in a single bound sounds more like 'Superman' than 'Superspy' nowadays. However, The superstitious nature of people during that age made it harder for them to seperate fact from fiction, and easier for the ninja to exploit an enemies fears of preternatural ability to gain an edge in combat.

The Shinobi Hero Unit is a mercenary clan of Veteran Ninja, selling its services only to those Daimyo who have gained enough prestige to capture thier attention. This unit is possibly the most deadly melee unit in the fall of the Samurai Campaign, the challenge is getting them close to the gun totting masses without being riddled with bullets... Close enough for a sword (as fictional Captain Aldrin would say!) They are superior in strength of arms, but run the risk of being overwhelmed by masses of large melee units like Shogitai, or being shot to pieces en-masse. The good news is that they retain some ranged ability by being able to throw firebombs as far as the Hattori and Tokugawa Ninja heroes whilst remaining stealthed. They also benefit from the Warcry ability, a reduced detection range, campaign map stealth, and immunity to attrition.

While their ancestors may have been loyal to the Shogun, these Shinobi have no such preference when choosing allegience. They are loyal first to thier clan, and whoever is paying them last. This means while less exclusive to recruit, you will have to build a Level 4 Legendary Samurai Dojo to hire them.

@Pvt. H. Lee - Have you ensured that the original packfile has been removed from the Data folder? If you have deleted it and it is still doing it, then it sounds like it could be a conflict, packfiles can be awkward and crash the game if the wrong data is entered. Start over with a fresh copy of my mod, then gradually increase the stats for attack, melee defense, charge and armor (add around 10 points to each to start with). Save as - "newnamedfile.pack". Ensure that you DISABLE the old packfile in the modmanager before deleting it . This is because the modmanager edits adds the name of every active mod to a load order config file. The crash could be caused by the Game trying to find the deleted packfile then hanging when it realises it has been deleted. Let me know if any of this works.

apparently if I change the melee attack, it doesn't show in custom battle and it crashes when I start single player... Do you know why it's doing that? I replaced the older mod with the modified mod with different name.

ty very much! the unit was very well made but it had similar stats to kisho ninja so I wanted to make it a bit stronger than kisho ninjas =D

@Pvt. H Lee - As the Shinobi Hero is meant primarily for Single Player FOTS Campaigns, The stats of the Hero are comparable to that of the Samurai Hero. In comparison to other FOTS units including Boshin Kisho Ninja - they are much stronger in melee attack, melee defense, morale, and throwing distance. The stats I decided upon were after hours of balance testing - I didn't want to create an uber unit that can one man an entire army, but they are not set in stone and may change in the future. IT IS POSSIBLE to easilly change these stats yourself with the use of "Packfile Manager" - by Daniu. A simple tool which will let you open up my packfile, enter the "unit_stats_land" table within, and change the stats for "boshin_inf_special_kisho_ninjas_Hero" up to a max of 99. I do ask that you save this under a different name and do not share this packfile to avoid confusion with my own version.

That sounds awesome and Iam really looking forward to your new mod. Thank you very much.

Is it possible to make this unit stronger? In a way they are the same as the kisho ninja (shinobi hero).

@pistolwhip - This mod is totally compatible with Vanilla Shogun 2 on its own , the "Fall of the Samurai" as a standalone game or a combination of both games purchased together. The only limitations are going to be set by what clans you have access to. For Example - A vanilla Shogun 2 install will allow you to play the Tokugawa's Ninja Hero, but unless you have the Hattori Clan pack DLC you will be unable to access the Hattori Ninja Hero. Likewise, FOTS is required to use the "Shinobi Hero" as it is only recruitable by a Boshin era clan... The same limitations will apply to those who only own the "Fall of the Samurai" as a standalone game - i.e - they will only be able to play the "Shinobi Hero", and will need to purchase the original Shogun 2 before being able to use the Tokugawa Ninja Hero, and will then require both Vanilla Shogun 2 and the Hattori Clan DLC to use the Hattori Ninja Hero. There is something for everyone no matter what version they possess.

@Mrawesome - I think that is a sound idea and I am going to get onto this right away, I totally agree that Hattori/Tokugawa Kisho Ninja are too alike the default Kisho ninja of other clans - however I am going to take this a step further. As Ninja are integral to the Ninja clans, I feel that they should be available earlier, and therefore take a more prominent role for the Ninja Clans. My idea is to introduce a low-ranking "Monomi Ninja " unit available at the same tech-level as Ashigaru units - similar to the Ikko-Ikki's Loan-Sword Ashigaru in stats, but with the added bonus of Stealth and Kisho training. I would Also look at making the Hattori and Tokugawa flavour of Kisho Ninja more unique than thier Vanilla Counter-parts. This is a simple change stats wise, so it shouldn't take long for me to produce something of this nature.

so this is compatible with vanilla right?
