Description
Era - 1880s / 1890s - Boxing - Lightweight

The first man to bear the name Jack Dempsey as a famed prizefighter was ironically born in Curran, Ireland as John Edward Kelly. Dempsey would then be known as the Nonpareil, an unmatched fighter thanks to his run from 1883 to 1889 in which he went undefeated, often taking on heavier fighters and becoming the original Middleweight champion.

Dempsey's initial losses were both notable, the first one against George LaBlanche was due to this opponent throwing an illegal "pivot punch" or backfist that was cited as illegal, but did not end the fight. Dempsey was still champion by 1901, when he lost the belt to the great Bob Fitzsimmons, who would go on to win the Heavyweight title. Dempsey took a beating during this fight, dropped thirteen times, and although asked to give up, he responded with the famous line "A champion never quits," before losing by knockout.

Dempsey was noted for his slick style and powerful right hand, and fought both bareknuckled and gloved fights. His slender build hid a rugged strength built from working in a Brooklyn barrel factory and years of collar and elbow wrestling.
