Aroo's Smackdown Files #11: Kurt Angle

Arguably the best in-ring technician in the WWE, Kurt Angle has continued to wow audiences in the squared circle with his impressive matches against the likes of Brock Lesnar (even going to a 1-hour Ironman Match on an episode of Smackdown), Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit. An olympic gold medalist, having won the 1996 Summer Olympics Heavyweight Freestyle event (with a broken freakin' neck, as he'd tell you), he'd utilise his amateur-wrestling skills to achieve great success in the WWE, becoming a 4-time WWE Champion, a WWE Grand Slam Champion and a former King of the Ring winner. In December 2002, he'd even start a short-lived faction, titled Team Angle, consisting of him and two other WWE debutees with an amateur wrestling background; Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.

Arguably going down in the books as one of the greatest superstars of all time, Kurt Angle has been plagued with neck problems stemming from his neck injury in 1996, having underwent neck surgery shortly after Wrestlemania 19 and Wrestlemania 20. Perhaps due to this, he would, for a brief time, become the General Manager of Smackdown in 2004 after Paul Heyman quit as GM, and was responsible for some of Smackdown's worst moments, whether it be trading away top talent Triple H for Booker T and the Dudley Boyz, or offering JBL a "Great American Award" (which granted its recipient a No. 1 Contender shot for the WWE Championship) for hunting down illegal Mexican immigrants. After an episode where he fired many of Smackdown's staff, including Tony Chimel, Funaki and many of the WWE Smackdown Divas, he would be fired by Vince McMahon after discovering he was faking his handicapped status.
