Description
Era - 1780s / 1790s - Boxing - Middleweight

One of the most important figures in the history of combat sports, Daniel Mendoza literally wrote the book on scientific boxing, was one of the first people ever to charge admission to an athletic exhibition and through his performances, improved Jewish respect in the England of his time.

Mendoza was born in 1764, and was fighting not too long after that date. A prolific street fighter, Mendoza was once stated to have fought three times on his way to observe a boxing match. By the age of 19, he turned professional. Although a natural Middleweight, Mendoza used newly innovated techniques to avoid getting hit, refined the use of the jab and managed to become the English Heavyweight Champion in 1789.

A prolific writer, Mendoza was the author of the Art of Pugilism, and was the first champion of the sport to pen his own memoirs. He even managed to meet with King George III, and was likely the first Jewish man to speak with the English monarch.
