How To Create Builds

We've all seen Warframe builds from guides, youtube videos, and other sources, but these builds are often general builds. Every player is different and has different tastes. Use this guide to learn to mod yourself so that each build is tailored specifically to your own needs!

We will be using important tools to create our builds.

Warframe Builder
Simulacrum
  • Cephalon Simaris offers a virtual simulation where you can test builds on enemies. It will cost 50k standing to buy.

How To Navigate Warframe Builder

  • Export - You can save your current build, by exporting which will provide a link that can be bookmarked.
  • Orokin Reactor - By default Orokin Reactors are applied but can be switched on or off
  • Forma - Be default formas are not applied, but can be enabled on at the top right hand corner. After enabling, clicking on any slot will give you an option to add/change/eliminate polarities.
  • Filter - search for specific mods
  • Mods Max Rank - Automatically max rank mod selection
  • Mods Min Rank - Automatically min rank mod selection
  • Capacity - The green bar shows remaining capacity and total capacity
  • No Helmet Equipped - Here you can equip an arcane helmet if you are using one. Note arcane helmets are discontinued items.
  • Details - Shows resulting stats
  • Mod Rank Upgrading/Downgrading - Hovering over a mod, allows you to upgrade or downgrade the mod using +/-.
Details Window
This window shows resulting stats after equipping mods. Here you can see exactly what equipped mods are doing!! Note that Power Duration, Strength, Efficiency, and Range always start at 100.
Health

Vitality and Umbral Vitality cannot be combined.

Because mods are multiplicative, warframes with high base health benefit the most from +health mods.

Low Base Health Equipped With Max Vitality
Nova Base Health = 300
Health With Max Vitality = 740
Total Health Increase = 440

High Base Health Equipped With Max Vitality
Nidus Base Health = 450
Health With Max Vitality = 1110
Total Health Increase = 660

Equation For Calculating Total Health
Total Health = Base Health × (1 + Modifier) + Health Gain From Leveling
Base Health is health of the warframe at rank 0.
Health Gain From Leveling is the difference between health at rank 30 and rank 0.
Armor

Steel Fiber and Umbral Fiber cannot be combined.

Damage Mitigation From Armor


Because mods are multiplicative, warframes with high base armor benefit the most from +armor mods.

Low Base Armor Equipped With Max Steel Fiber
Nova Base Armor = 65
Armor With Max Steel Fiber = 136.5
Total Armor Increase = 71.5

High Base Armor Equipped With Max Steel Fiber
Valkyr Prime Base Armor = 700
Armor With Max Steel Fiber = 1470
Total Armor Increase = 770

Net Armor Calculation
Net Armor = Base Armor ( 1 + Mod Multiplier )

Damage Mitigation Calculation
Damage Mitigation = Net Armor / ( Net Armor + 300)

Damage mitigation from armor only applies to health, not shields.
Shield


Because mods are multiplicative, warframes with high base shield benefit the most from +shield mods.

Low Base Shield Equipped With Max Redirection
Nova Base Shield = 300
Health With Max Redirection = 740
Total Shield Increase = 440

High Base Shield Equipped With Max Redirection
Trinity Prime Base Shield = 450
Shield With Max Redirection = 1110
Total Health Increase = 660

Equation For Calculating Total Shield
Total Shield = Base Shield × (1 + Modifier) + Shield Gain From Leveling
Base Shield is Shield of the warframe at rank 0.
Shield Gain From Leveling is the difference between Shield at rank 30 and rank 0.

Toxin And Gas Bypasses Shields
Modding a ton of shield will not help against certain Infested enemies that attack with Toxin and Gas.

Armor only applies to health, not shields. Damage Mitigation from other sources such as abilities DOES apply to shields.
Damage Resistence




The resistance received from this mod stacks multiplicatively with other sources of resistance such as armor and abilities.
What Is Effective Health?
Effective Health is an effective way of calculating survivability and provides a precise number. It is a alternative way of looking at survivability from an increase of effective health rather than a damage mitigation standpoint. You can think of it as total damage an enemy will have to deal to you before you die. For example a warframe with 1000 health and 50% damage mitigation from armor will have an effective health of 2000.

Effective Health = Shield + ( Health ) / ( 1 - Damage Reduction )

Effective Health is affected by status procs caused by enemies

Because mods are multiplicative, warframes with high base sprint benefit the most from +sprint mods.

Low Base Sprint Equipped With Max Rush
Rhino Base Sprint = 0.90
Sprint With Max Rush = 1.17
Total Sprint Increase = 0.27

High Base Sprint Equipped With Max Rush
Loki Base Sprint = 1.25
Sprint With Max Rush = 1.63
Total Sprint Increase = 0.43

Auras

Auras That Affect Teammates and Stack With Teammates' Auras
  • Corrosive Projection (-30% enemy armor)
  • Energy Siphon (+0.6 energy regen)
  • Shield Disruption (-24% enemy shield capacity)
  • Sprint Boost (+15% sprint speed)
  • Growing Power (status proc increases Power Strength by 25% for 6 seconds)
  • Stand United (+25.5% armor)
  • Infested Impedance (infested -18% speed capped at -75%)
  • EMP Aura (corpus -15% accuracy)
  • Power Donation (-30 power strength +30 power strength to teammates)
Coaction Drift Mod
  • Aura Strength increases the effect of your aura on everyone.
  • Aura Effectiveness increases the effect of everyone's auras on yourself.

*Growing Power is not affected by Coaction Drift.

The top of the abilities tab lists the warframe's passive. Rhino's passive creates a shock wave upon landing.



Taking Rhino's Stomp for example, we see that:
  • Power Strength affects damage.
  • Duration affects time enemies spend in stasis.
  • Range affects radius.
  • Base energy cost per cast is 100 energy.
  • At rank 4, Stomp:
    • does 800 damage
    • lasts 8 seconds
    • affects enemies within 25 meters
    • slows enemies by 97.5%
What "X / X / X / X" means
You'll often see four numbers separated by dividers. This just represents stats of the ability at rank 1 / rank 2 / rank 3 / rank 4.

Tabs
  • Info - explains how Power Strength, Duration, Range, And Efficiency mods affect the ability and gives important details on how the ability works
  • Augment - lists the effects of augment mods which change the mechanics of an ability
  • Tips & Tricks - tips contributed by the warframe community
  • Maximization - shows the effects of maximum power strength, efficiency, duration, or range
Importance of the Info Tab
For example power strength often affects the damage of an ability. However, in specialized instances such as Nova's Molecular Prime, it also affects how much enemy movement is slowed or sped up. Range usually affects the Area of Effect radius. However, for Molecular Prime, it only affects the explosion range, and not how far the wave travels. Instead duration affects how far the wave travels. All particular information will be included in the Info Tab.
Power Strength
Positive Effect

Intensify and Umbral Intensify cannot be combined.

Negative Effect


Power Strength often affects ability damage with exceptions. Examples:
  • Nova Molecular Prime - affects enemy movement buff/debuff
  • Frost Snow Globe - affects globe health
  • Vauban Bastille - affects number of enemies each Bastille can simultaneously suspend in stasis.

Energy Efficiency
Positive Effect


Negative Effect


Power Efficiency is capped at 175
A rank 4 Fleeting Expertise and rank 4 Streamline provides 175 energy efficiency.

+Power Efficiency often increases energy efficiency with exceptions. Example:
  • Nidus Virulence - energy refund is inversely affected by Ability Efficiency because it is always 25% of energy used to cast, per enemy.

Energy Gain on Damage to Health


Builds can take into account sources of energy regen:
  • Energy Orbs
  • Energy Siphon
  • Zenurik Energizing Dash
  • Hunter Adrenaline/Rage
  • Arcane Energize
  • Trinity Energy Vampire
  • Harrow Thurible
  • Abilities that refund energy under certain conditions
  • Death Orbs in Void missions restore 250 energy for Prime warframes
  • Squad Energy Restore
Energy Efficiency for Channeling Abilities
Channeling abilities usually have an energy cost to cast and an energy drain to maintain. Examples of Channeling Abilities are:
  • Excalibur Exalted Blade
  • Equinox Maim
  • Banshee Quake
  • Ember World On Fire
  • Ivara Prowl
  • Mesa Peace Maker
  • Nyx Absorb
  • Revenant Danse Macabre
  • Titania Razorwing
  • Valkyr Hysteria
  • Wukong Defy
Energy Efficiency for channeling abilities are affected primarily by energy efficiency and secondarily by duration. It is also sometimes capped. For example Mesa Peace Maker is capped at 3.75 energy per second.

To mod for maximum Energy Efficiency for Channeling Abilities, equip:
  • rank 4 Fleeting expertise
  • rank 4 Streamline
  • duration mod(s), if cap isn't reached
Energy Regen for Channeling Abilities is affected by:
  • Energy Orb Pickup
  • Hunter Adrenaline
  • Rage
Energy Regen for Channeling Abilities is NOT affected by:
  • Energy Siphon
  • Zenurik Energizing Dash
  • Trinity's Energy Vampire (exception: Equinox Maim)
  • Squad Energy Restore

Power Duration often affects how long an ability lasts with exceptions. Examples:
  • Nova Molecular Prime - determines how far the wave travels
  • Zephyr Tail Wind - affects air speed
  • Trinity Energy Vampire - negative duration increases energy leech

  • Nova Molecular Prime - wave travel is affected by duration not range

Faster Cast Speeds can potentially:
  • Increase dps for damage abilities with long cast animations
  • Provide faster transitions from ability to abilities, weapons, and/or movement.
  • Provide greater survivability (if ability leaves you immobile for a long duration)
Enemy Radar


Enemy Radar can help with:
  • Interception missions - locate enemies at vulnerable capture points
  • Eidolon Captures - quickly find Vomvalyst
  • Exterminate Speed Runs - quickly locate enemies
  • Trinity Energy Vampire - makes locating enemies easier
Loot Radar


Loot Radar can help with searching for:
  • Cephalon/Soma/Frame Fighter fragments
  • Loot containers
  • Syndicate Medallions
  • POE/Fortuna resources
Bullet Jump/Parkour Velocity


Elemental

  • Creates nice effects good for fashion frame
Physical


Important Note on Parkour Damage Mods
  • Jumping by Sensor Regulators in Grineer Spy Missions will cause damage to them and result in alert status.
  • Parkour Damage Mods do extremely low damage.
Mod Combos/Synergies
Alternate Source of Survivability

Note that some players do not like Quick Thinking because when proc'd it causes a stagger animation.

Nekros Desecrate and Nezha Blazing Chakram

  • Nekros Desecrate - causes health orbs to drop from enemies and increased energy orb drop chance
  • Nezha Blazing Chakram - causes health orbs to drop from enemies and increased energy orb drop chance
Zephyr Tail Wind and Innate Glide

  • Zephyr Tail Wind - many players use Zephr to fly, so she will be airborne often
  • Zephyr Innate Glide - Zephyr has an extremely high base glide
Nezha Innate Slide

  • Nezha has extremely high base slide
Miscellaneous
Knock Down Recovery

Can indirectly increase survivability through knockdown recovery. Situations with increased susceptibility to knockdown:
  • Swarms of enemies (specific units from each faction cause knockdown)
  • Swarms of Eximus Units (Sortie with modifier Eximus Stronghold)
  • Orb Vallis with high alert status
Hacking Time

Can be helpful in:
  • Sorties - since ciphers cannot be used and failure to hack a vault results in mission failure
  • Farming Ivara - since a chance for an Ivara part requires all vaults to be successfully hacked
  • Mastery Rank 5 Test - This test requires players to hack six terminals within a time limit of 1:45.
Aim Glide And Wall Latch

Can be helpful for:
  • Riven Challenge - Get X Kills In A Row While Wall Dashing Or Wall Clinging Without Touching The Floor (especially good with Loki who has a 60 second base wall latch time)
  • Riven Challenge - Get 3 Headshot Kills In A Single Aim Glide
Holster Rate

  • Can be helpful if you tend to switch weapons a lot
