Every knight knows that his armor is more than a tool or a warmachine: The armor is as much the extention of the knight, as the knight is an extention of the armor. The massive admantium colossus is a work of art, finely crafted for the only canvas that matters in the 41'st millenium: ETERNAL WAR!

These mighty warriors in their shining suits belonged to a now whiped out and forgotten lesser house. All remaining knights adopted the Wolf insignia. Adorning this insignia means that these knights will only rest when they have avenged those that did them and their house wrong.
After their house fell, all Knights became Freeblades. Some joined Imperial armies, most the joined the Adeptus Mechanicus. All still hunt their former houses many enemies.
