Description
Adds the Drell Compact as a Civilization, led by Thane Krios.

Born in 2146, Thane Krios is a Drell assassin, rumoured to be the most skilled in the galaxy. He began his training at the age of six, and at the age of twelve he made his first kill. Unlike most assassins, who prefer to snipe their targets from a distance, Thane prefers to get up close and kill his target personally, utilizing a mixture of stealth, firearms, hand-to-hand combat and biotic abilities. Despite his profession, Thane is a deeply spiritual man who prays for success in his missions.

Trait: (The Whole) +2 food and faster movement on desert tiles. Fish and Oasis provide +2 Gold and Culture.

UB: Sea Temple. Replaces Harbor. Forms a trade route. +2 Faith. Each nearby flood plain provides +1 production.

UU: Assassin. Replaces Rifleman, available in all eras after. 3 range, must set up to attack. 1-shots all land units except Armor, Siege and Anti-Air/Armor. Dies in 1-shot. Useless against cities.

This is the thirteenth of our planned Mass Effect civs, the Drell. Why fear the desert you can embrace it? The land is yours to command and protect, you can thrive where others can't, move fast as they move slow. Be the envy of those around you and show them that a barren landscape to them can become a thriving metropolis to you, and watch as even their armies will not be able to match the speed of yours.

So instead of talking about the Drell's trait it'd be best to address what their civ is built around first, which is the Assassin. The Assassin was meant to be an incredibly powerful unit, a gamechanger in the right situation, but it had to be designed in a way that didn't completely trivialise war or make things too easy. It had to be used for assassinating, for being used tactically, and to turn the tide of battle with intelligence rather than a brute force that wouldn't suit it. This is why it's one of the most high risk high reward units in the game. While it's fantastic in the era it appears its power does diminish as time goes by, and its frailty and uselessness against anything it can't kill in a single shot restricts it from entering large scale conflicts or going on the attack. Though its power is still undeniable, which is why it cannot do anything to Anti-Air/Armour, because if it did you could effectively win every battle with some Assassins and some tanks.

Now their trait was always going to concentrate on their speed in some way, and being a desert race (something that isn't very well known, in fact Kepral's Syndrome is actually caused by the humid climate of the Hanar homeworld) they were obviously going to get bonuses for desert tiles. It was designed in a way that, with the double movement and growth, desert tiles would be incredibly desirable. The Oasis and Fish bonuses are also meant to represent their memory, as both of those things would mean more for a race that originated in the desert, and the Sea Temple helps represent their spirituality and is, like the Fish bonus, a slight reference to the Hanar. Though, as you may have noticed, both their trait and the Sea Temple are very situational. The reason for that is partly because of the Assassin again. In the right situation the Drell can thrive and with a big enough desert they'll be fantastic, and will have one of the best units in the game to boot, but the risk for this is having a very situational trait and a rather normal UB outside of the desert.

As a final note I would like to give a massive thanks to a-iccara, from Deviantart, for her incredible help on creating a custom made Drell symbol for us to use.

This is a dual project and we plan on creating and releasing all these civs (in no particular order) in the near future, and hopefully you'll enjoy them. :)

Troubleshooting

  • This mod requires Gods and Kings.
  • If you have Gods and Kings and don't know how to download or activate this mod, please follow this step-by-step guide by clicking here[forums.civfanatics.com].
  • If some, but not all, of the civs downloaded, then try exiting the game and unsubscribing and resubscribing through Steam Workshop, outside of the game. Steam just acts weird sometimes.
  • If you have a Mac then Steam Workshop wont work for you. Please click here[forums.civfanatics.com] and follow the instructions.
  • If the step-by-step guide or the troubleshooting still never fixed your problem, it's a common cache issue, which can be fixed by these steps:

    1) Unsubscribe from the mod. Exit Steam and Civ 5 completely
    2) Empty your mod folder (create backups) located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\MODS
    3) Delete the 'Civ5ModsDatabase.db' file located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\cache
    4) Restart steam, subscribe, restart Civ 5.

The Drell have the same issue as the vorcha, being that there are few named ones. I suppose the leader works, for that reason.
