Avaris

City-State Trait: After the discovery of the Wheel, you can build the Maryannu Chariot Archer Unique Unit at half cost. Cities with a Granary get +1 Food.

City-State Type: Militaristic

History:
Avaris is the site of the ancient capital of the Hyksos who reigned over Egypt at the end of the second intermediate period (15th Dynasty). The city was found at Tell el-Dab'a in the Eastern Delta. The site was occupied since the Middle Kingdom, a temple of the XIth Dynasty and the XIIth Dynasty was discovered in Ezbet Rushdi to the north of the site. A temple of Seth was also cleared there while the city Hyksos is to look further south, to Ezbet Helmi, where an enclosure and a fortress were cleared by Manfred Bietak who searches the site as well as that of Pi-Ramses. The city of Ramses II (nineteenth dynasty) is indeed located a little further north and then encompassed the city of Avaris which will form somehow southern suburbs of the future capital Ramesside. Excavations have revealed in addition to the characteristic burials of the Hyksos period with funerary furnishings rich in arms and beetles in the names of the ruling pharaohs, barracks and remains of other buildings that could be chapels or small royal temples. It is in this part that was to form the necropolis of the city, not far from the fortress which guarded the access by the Nile, that were found notably two sculptures of notables of the city which were systematically hammered but of which the atypical hairstyle would be a particular feature of these "invaders" that the Egyptians will chase during the conflict that will oppose them, led by the Theban rulers of the 17th dynasty. Traces of this conflict have been discovered in the area of the citadel which will later be reused as a palace. Indeed during the stratigraphic study of the site a layer of carbon was identified, characteristic of a level of destruction by fire confirming that the city had to undergo the assaults of the story which thus replace the legend. Many arrowheads and vestiges of military activity are added to these discoveries attesting that a siege took place and validating the autobiographical accounts of Ahmos son of Abana who followed Ahmosis during his reconquest of the territory, at the dawn of the eighteenth dynasty.

Compatible with Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.

imo, while the concept of city states that grant use of unique units is fun and interesting in how it gives military strength for a brief period where you otherwise wouldn't have it, the Maryannu Chariot archer is unlocked a bit too early in the game for a player to easily grab up 3 envoys and also make use of the UU in time before it becomes obsolete.
