Description
Era - 1960s / 1970s - Boxing - Middleweight

Exceptionally fast reflexes, two handed power and an aggressive approach took Emile Griffith to the top of two weight divsions, although his career was always marked by a terrible incident that took place early on.

Finding success as an amateur fighter in winning the New York Golden Gloves, Griffith turned pro in 1958, immediately starting out fighting top opposition, and defeating Benny "Kid" Paret for the Welterweight Title in 1961. The two would rematch in the same year, this time, with Paret winning by a close decision, setting up a third fight in the following year.

On March 24, 1962, Emile Griffith and Benny "Kid" Paret staged their rubber match for the Welterweight title of the world. Paret blasted the secretly bisexual Griffith with gay slurs at the weight-in, setting the stage for what would turn out to be a brutal struggle. Griffith unleashed fury in the 12th round, blasting Paret with a series of unanswered uppercuts, without the referee or the corner stopping the fight, he continued with a flurry with Payet draped over the corner before the fight finally ended. Benny Payet left the ring in a coma. He died ten days afterwards without waking up again. This fight was in large part a factor in the decline of the sport as a regular prime time broadcast staple.

Griffith's career carried on after the Payet fight. A more cautious fighter afterwards, he would be KOed by the infamous Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, defeated ♥♥♥♥ Tiger in 1966 for the Middleweight title and held a trilogy with Luis Rodriguez and Nino Benvenuti, and fought the great Carlos Monzon later on.
