By 2002, Jeff Hardy had moved on from primarily competing as a tag team wrestler with his brother Matt, and had become one of the most popular members of the WWE roster. A legendary title challenge against the Undertaker on an episode of Raw elevated his status significantly, but within a year he exited to pursue his career elsewhere, going to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. He would challenge multiple times in the upper card, but by 2006, found himself back in WWE.

On this run, Hardy would win multiple runs with the WWE title, the Intercontinental title and team with his brother, before continuing the cycle and returning to TNA one more time to win the title there.
