Description
Era - 1960s/1980s - AWA/NWA

One of the most intelligent, well-spoken wrestlers of his era, or any, Nick Bockwinkel set the standard both in the ring and behind the microphone for generations to come. Son of a wrestler and trained by Lou Thesz, Bockwinkel worked around the country through the 60s and eventually settled on the American Wrestling Association in 1970. He formed a team with tag specialist Ray Stevens, winning multiple titles, but perhaps his most important takeway from the team was the managerial services of Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.

After breaking with Stevens, Bockwinkel won the AWA title in 1975, defeating Verne Gagne and setting off a longstanding feud in the process. He held the title until 1980, losing to his old foe Gagne, only to regain the belt when the champion retired. Bockwinkel would regain the title several more times and remained a vital competitor even into his fifties.
