[NS] Lohengrin Sunderer

Description

Excalibur Initiative doctrine focused on only deploying light aircraft planetside, with heavier firepower delivered from orbit. However, the Nadia Republic was not in a position to be dictating those kinds of terms at this time, and they needed something to fill the heavy strike role in the absence of orbital superiority.

NS submitted the Lohengrin for this contract. Used against hardened targets at extreme range, its primary armament was a devastatingly powerful railgun capable of lobbing a variety of shells at high speed. The contract also stipulated some form of point defense, and NS did include it, but it was obvious to all that it was a waste on something this low and slow.

Built for RLM Contest #6: Armed Airships!. It scored #2.

1x scale. Probably.

Built from 60% recycled parts. Do your bit to help the environment!

All propulsion and most attitude control is provided by thrust vectoring - including altitude.

Prop engines (especially Cocytus-type turbine engines) and piston-based thrust vectoring do not mix (ignore the XFA-27; I have no idea how that works!). An early rule (prop engines only) forced me to mix the two; the resulting problems were utterly crippling and forced me to devise a toring-based system (which is much stronger, but also much bulkier). The rule was removed some hours later, much to my chagrin - and yet, the propeller engine (now that it worked) actually had several benefits over spiral-based engines (such as stability and passive control).

This craft was built with the express purpose of confetti-ing UNITGX48's aerial battleship (which never surfaced). To this end, it is built around a 50x heavy cannon. The craft will handle spam-firing, but is not automatic by default because of severe recoil.

No overflow cannons - fire on the move.

Balloon-stabilised. :^)

Sunderers are heavy assault craft.
They are designed to dispose of hardened emplacements and large vehicles. They deliver destruction from afar upon bunkers, tank columns, airships, and any other target which is more than a swarm of harassers can handle but not quite enough to justify orbital firepower.

           My toolbox. Contains useful stuff.
