i know its a really cumbersome way of dealing with this but its the most efficient way i found to set custom colors. the only other approach that ive seen out there was a mod that placed coloring shops in the world.. which essentially housed slaves belonging to various factions. you'd hand them your colorable gear that wasnt colored yet and they'd equip it, thus setting the color for that specidic item. at some point that mod stopped working and i have no idea if it ever got updated.
as far as this approach goes, the player faction is a global setting for the game and without proper scripting support we have to jump through hoops to get what we want.
