History:
The Pukara de Quitor is a 12th century Atacamean fortification. It is located 3km north of San Pedro de Atacama. This defensive construction built on the whole perimeter of the hill or cerro is the answer to the expansionist wills of the Aymara people. The enclosure of Quitor is about 70 meters high and occupies an area of 2.5 hectares.
The name of Quitor comes from the pre-Hispanic agrarian community "Ayllu de Quitor" housed down in the small valley. The small community has all of its agricultural production at the foot of the Pukara. The Rio Grande is born in the valley and irrigates the cultures.
The ruins of the wall of Quitor are impressive. The Pukara of Quitor was provided with atalayas, small watchtowers preventing attacks. Indeed, it had to be protected because it served as a huge discount for agricultural production.
Around 1450, the region was conquered by the Incas who set up an administrative center there. In 1536, the Spanish settler Francisco de Aguirre stormed Pukara with only 30 men. He submits the peoples of the region and prepares for the arrival of Colon Pedro de Valdivia in Chile.
