North American F-82 Twin Mustang

The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was a long-range escort fighter. It was the last piston engined fighter ordered into production by the USAF. Although intended to serve in World War 2, the War ended before production began, so it instead saw service in the Korean War. The first 3 aircraft shot down by US planes in that war were from F-82s. It was based on the P-51H, which differs in various things from the P-51D. These changes include rearranged weapons, lengthened and slimmer nose, a lengthened tail, a different intake, different wings, and a taller vertical stabilizer. The F-82 actually shares very little with the P-51. After 272 were produced, it was retired in 1953. Very few exist today, and just recently, a restored one flew for the first time, and is the only flying F-82 in existence.
