Description
Adds the Prothean Empire as a Civilization, led by Javik.

In Prothean society, there were many 'Avatars', Protheans who embodied a single virtue for the society. Javik is one of those Avatars, and his virtue is Vengeance. A powerful warrior, Javik was destined to lead a new Prothean Empire, but he survived the extinction of his race and awoke from stasis fifty thousand years later, with the pledge that vengeance will be his.

Trait: (Cosmic Imperative) All cities provide +2 culture and +2 production. Captured cities decrease unhappiness 2%. +10% combat vs larger civs.

UU: Avatar. Replaces Great General. Moves 4 tiles. +15% combat bonus for nearby units. +25% combat bonus for same tile unit.

UB: Artifact. Replaces Temple. +2 Faith. +2 gold. Melee and Gun units built in city spawn Avatars through combat 10% faster.

UB: Beacon. Replaces Observatory. Doesn't require a mountain. +20% science. +2 science. Requires 2 Iron.

This is the seventeenth of our planned Mass Effect civs, the Protheans. The strong flourish, the weak perish, this has always been the way of the universe. Build your empire and expand your culture. Seize your enemies cities and make your people happier, their size is no advantage, it only makes you stronger. Do not be restricted by these primitives, you have many paths to choose.

Now the Protheans have quite the back story on their creation. There were many paths that we could have taken with them. Culture was top of the list, due to their absorbtion of other races into their Empire, which meant that the dominating culture of their cycle was the Protheans, plus the fact that many remnants of their architecture survived the millenia. But, like some of our other races, they were always going to be a "hybrid" race rather than one that excelled soley in one aspect. They were at first meant to be a hybrid of culture and combat, an aggressive but powerful empire which could go toe-to-toe with the larger races, but as time went on other ideas came up. Science is one path which was considered, given how advanced the Protheans were, but that was eventually decided against as the games imply it wasn't their intelligence that led them to create their advanced technology, as they were advancing down the same technological path the current cycle is, it was the fact their civilization lasted longer. Eventually, after pages of planning, it was decided that they'll be a race that's a hybrid of many things, built around a large empire.

Their culture bonus in every city gives them an early edge and helps lessen the penalty created by expanding, and the production bonus is an extra bonus to boost to early development. The combat bonus again helps them in the early game and is inspired by their beliefs, survival of the fittest, and means that creating a larger civilization than the Protheans will actually be a slight disadvantage when fighting them, though the combat bonus also disappears for the Protheans when fighting a smaller civilization. Their reduced unhappiness from captured cities helps them sustain a large empire, and gives them a motivation to capture civilizations.

The UU, the Avatar, is a faster Great General that grants an increased bonus to same tile units. The Artifact helps grant more Avatars faster and its gold bonus is a boost to help pay for that empire. Their Beacon, whilst only granting 20% science compared to the Observatorys 50%, is available in every city as it only requires 1 Iron rather than a mountain. All-in-all this means the Protheans are designed around creating, and sustaining, a large empire. In exchange for not excelling in one specific area, they're blessed with the freedom to choose many paths to victory.

As a final note I would like to give a massive thanks to a-iccara, from Deviantart, for her incredible help on creating a custom made Prothean symbol for us to use.

This is a dual project and we plan on creating and releasing all these civs (in no particular order) in the near future, and hopefully you'll enjoy them. :)

Troubleshooting

  • This mod requires Gods and Kings.
  • If you have Gods and Kings and don't know how to download or activate this mod, please follow this step-by-step guide by clicking here[forums.civfanatics.com].
  • If some, but not all, of the civs downloaded, then try exiting the game and unsubscribing and resubscribing through Steam Workshop, outside of the game. Steam just acts weird sometimes.
  • If you have a Mac then Steam Workshop wont work for you. Please click here[forums.civfanatics.com] and follow the instructions.
  • If the step-by-step guide or the troubleshooting still never fixed your problem, it's a common cache issue, which can be fixed by these steps:

    1) Unsubscribe from the mod. Exit Steam and Civ 5 completely
    2) Empty your mod folder (create backups) located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\MODS
    3) Delete the 'Civ5ModsDatabase.db' file located at: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\My documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\cache
    4) Restart steam, subscribe, restart Civ 5.

author, protheans had a vast empire and crushed all other civilizations . I think the combat bonus must be changed from "larger" to "smaller"

Okay, I don't need to say anything here. Javik was the only option for the Prothean leader, so yeah.

Thanks for the update. Cerberus kept kicking my ass cause he was super advanced from all of the reaper tech that he had stolen... which actually makes a lot sense based off of what happens in ME3

@Bpwilliams - That doesn't make sense, you must have a mod that is causing conflicts of some sort.

In my playing the game w/3 or your civs, one of the 3 races have randomly spawned. I'm about half way through the map in game so hopefully I will come across the other two races randomly. Appears they will randomly spawn in-game but did not see them as an option to manually assign to teams.

@Bpwilliams - Your only option is to follow the Mac link and install them manually, though it appears the file uploading website is currently down, meaning you're either going to have to wait a couple of hours to see if it comes back online or, if you can't wait, add me as a friend and I'll e-mail the file to you.

i enable all mods, they were enabled/green box checked every time i re-subscribed, not trying to be arrogant but i am an IT person (just not a programmer, but know a little about programming)--was just wondering if you could provide some additional assistance--fyi i'm currently playing another game from beginning to finish and have 3 of your civ mods enabled, i'll let you know if i run across them in the game i looked at setting all 3 civs as an ai but did not see them so hopefully they will randomly spawn that has occurred on another mod i tried/subscribed to
