History:
Tarquinia is the name of the Etruscan city near the current town of Tarquinia, a town in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio, Italy: the site of the ancient city is located about 2 km northeast of the city current. In Etruscan times, Tarquinia was one of the twelve cities gathered in the Etrurian dodecapolis. According to the legend reported by Strabo, the city was founded by Tarchon, king of the Lydians. In 616 BC, the city sees the birth of a certain Lucumon, son of a Corinthian emigrant, Bacchiade. Despite her wealth and marriage to a high-ranking Etruscan woman, he can not meet his ambitions; he therefore exiles himself to Rome, where he renames Tarquin the Elder, and becomes the fifth of the seven kings (legendary) of the City. His son or grandson, Tarquin the Superb, by his tyrannical behavior will provoke the revolt of the Roman citizens and the overthrow of Roman royalty ... From 358 to 351 BC. J. - C. and from 311 to 308 av. J. - C., wars opposed Tarquinia to the Roman Republic. During the first of these two wars, there was cruelty on both sides. The Romans first suffered a devastating defeat and the Tarquinians executed 307 prisoners on the forum of their city. In 353 BC AD the fortune of the weapons changed sides and the Romans put to death 358 Tarquinians on their own forum. In 351 BC AD, they granted Tarquinia an armistice of forty years.
