Description
Era - 1880s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Patrick "Paddy" Ryan was the last of his era in a number of ways, the final champion of the predominantly bare knuckle years, the last Heavyweight Champion of America before the title was seen as a true World championship.

Ryan was born in the town of Thurles in Tipperary, Ireland but made his name in America, in the city of Troy, New York, gaining the moniker of the Trojan Giant. A strong wrestler who was able to make up for his basic boxing skills with a strong chin and rugged determination, Ryan defeated Joe Goss in 1880 for the Heavyweight Championship of America in a fight that went an absurd 87 rounds before it concluded.

Ryan held the title through 1882 when he answered the challenge of John L. Sullivan. While his clinchwork held up in the early going, exhaustion and Sullivan's harder punches would take their toll with a big right hand finishing the job in the 9th round. Ryan declared his retirement after the bout, but would continue to fight on soon enough.
