Description
Era - 1980s / 1990s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Known primarily as the final foe of Muhammad Ali's landmark career, dropping the Heavyweight title to Mike Tyson within two rounds and for his erratic, inexcusable behavior outside the ring, Jamaican-born Trevor Berbick was one of the more notable Heavyweight fighters of the 1980s.

Born in Norwich, Port Antonio, Jamaica, Berbick represented his nation in the 1976 Olympic Games, going professional and moving to Canada by 1979. Berbick beat several top Heavies in the previously undefeated Greg Page and beltholder Pinklon Thomas. However, these two fights were bookended by his most famous, less fortunate fights.

Berbick fought a diminished, 39 year old Muhammad Ali in the former champion's final bout. Ali was already suffering from early-onset Parkinson's disease and was far from the heights he once achieved. Even so, Ali's spirit and toughness carried him through ten tough rounds. Five years later, Iron Mike Tyson would dispatch Berbick in two rounds.

A strange postscript here would be the unfortunate, and undeniably hilarious run in with the great Larry Holmes in 1991. Berbick walked into a Holmes press conference, insulting his family, and was ushered back outside. Following this, an enraged Holmes would jump up on top of a limo, running across the length of the roof, and launch himself feet first at Berbick with a flying dropkick, a surreal moment to say the least.
