Nice optimization!

Just looking at speed of element production, the shortest possible loop is 8 cycles, so you're definitely within 10 cycles of fastest possible, and quite possibly there. Good job!

Even faster! https://imgur.com/a/yL5STSp When I first got a 58 cycle solution it broke the gif maker for unknown reasons, but this new link works. Maybe this is the lowest cycle count?

Interesting! I like the way the two halves slide in parallel to the point where they bond together.
