Description
Era - 1890s - Boxing - Heavyweight

One of the roughest, toughest, most relentless boxers ever to set foot inside the ropes, Tom Sharkey may not have ever been the champ, but he wreaked havoc in the division, regardless. Sharkey may not have had size on most of his opponents, but he had terrible knockout power, and strength enough that it was said he could bend silver dollars in his hands.

Born in Ireland, Sharkey ran away early in life, joining the crew of a ship as a cabin boy. He made his way to America and joined the US Navy, where he began his pugilistic career. Sharkey took on many of the top names of his era, including Joe Choynski, James J. Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons, defeating Choynski after being punched out of the ring and hitting his head on unprotected concrete, reaching a draw with Corbett and beating Fitzsimmons by perhaps the most controvercial decision in the history of the sport.

Sharkey however, would have his most storied set of contests against the formidible James J. Jeffries. Their first fight ended with a judge's decision in favor of Jeffries, who dwarfed the 5'8, 183 lbs Sharkey at 6'0 and 210 lbs. Sharkey vowed to win the rematch or die trying, and indeed went into their second fight with a determined approach, and ended up taking horrendous damage, but not the title.
