I can actually think of several ways to explain a heavy unit of physical ammo for an ""Energy"" weapon. For instance, it could be a "mag bottle" containing plasma or even a few particles of antimatter which is then accelerated down the barrel.
---It could use the explosives to trigger a nuclear reaction, then use that reaction to power a hilariballz powerful laser...
---Maybe the ""Ammo"" is some kind of reaction material, and it uses the power from the ship's reactors to instigate said reaction internally and then uses only the very high-level pulse of energy from the secondary reaction to power the laser/plasma beam/particle cannon etc... ...
Come on, guys, this is scifi here, & in the immortal words of that mutant baby thing;
"Ooooopeeen your miiiiinnnd" <--
So yeah, as long as it's reasonably cheap, the effects are decent, and the background lore makes sense, having some kind of ""Ammo" for an energy weapon is just fine with me...
I don't have a specific model for it yet but you're meant to be putting some kind of energy cell in it.
