Description
Era - 1880s / 1900s - Boxing - Heavyweight

A giant of his times, despite only weighing in at an average of 167 lbs per fight, Joe Choynski was as hard hitting as any of his larger contemporaries. Having fought four champions in James Jefferies, James Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons and Jack Johnson, both Corbett and Johnson stated that Choynski was the heaviest puncher they ever encountered.

Interestingly enough, after he knocked out Johnson in 1901, seven years before the Galveston Giant would win the Heavyweight championship, Choynski would spend mutual time in jail with his fellow boxer, with the sport outlawed at the time. During the duration of their incarceration, Choynski gave Johnson an advanced lesson in boxing, a moment that helped advance his career.

Choynski was never a champion in his own right, but held his own with the best of his time.
