Description
Era - 1990s / 2000s - Boxing - Heavyweight

On the precipice of the era of Super Heavyweights, a natural Middleweight managed to prove that size isn't a guarantee for victory.

Chris Byrd was a standout amateur, born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and won three US Amateur titles before scoring a Silver Medal in the 1992 Olympics at Middleweight. He turned pro in the following year, rattling off twenty six straight wins, defeating solid opponents including Phil Jackson, Smokin' Bert Cooper and Ross Purrity before running into a destructive uppercut from Ike Ibeabuchi in 1999.

Fate would smile on Byrd on the following year, as Razor Ruddock's withdrawal from a title match with Vitali Klitchko gave him a chance to win gold. And he did, as Vitali's shoulder gave out, forcing him to quit between rounds. This was a short lived title reign, as in the same year, Vitali's brother Wladimir did as the brothers often did in the 2000s, and avenged his loss to take the belt back.

Byrd continued on, defeating the formidible puncher David Tua in an outstanding performance, setting up a title shot in 2002 at Evander Holyfield for his piece of the Heavyweight title, and this time, there were no technicalities as Byrd outboxed the Real Deal to a title victory. Around this time, a proposed fight was discussed between Byrd and Lennox Lewis, a fight that would be rejected for monetary reasons.
