For years, the pride and joy of the English heavyweight scene, a people's champion, Frank Bruno brought a straight forward heavy handed approach to the ring. Following a short amateur career, Bruno turned pro in 1982, railing off twenty one consecutive knockouts to begin his career. A loss to James "Bonecrusher" Smith broke his streak, but Bruno quickly recovered, winning the European Heavyweight title and defeated the formidible South African, Gerrie Coetzee.

A loss to Tim Witherspoon provided another setback, and losses to Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, while perfectly forgivable, seemed to provide an endless roadblock between Bruno and the championship. However, in 1995, Bruno was eventually able to taste gold as he managed to defeat the iron chinned Oliver McCall by a decision.
