Description
Era - 1980s / 1990s - Boxing - Heavyweight

One of the most well-rounded contenders of the 80s and a true Philadelphia boxing product, Terrible Tim Witherspoon may not have been consistent enough to rank among the elite of the all time greats, but no foe could ever take him lightly.

Witherspoon stood in as a sparring partner for the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali in his training camp for Larry Holmes. Spoon figured that the Ali he faced was much diminished, and was not impressed with Holmes's subsequent victory. And three years later, after a fifteen fight win streak and a victory over Renaldo Snipes, Witherspoon would himself face Holmes, pushing the champion across twelve tough rounds, losing a split decision in the end.

Holmes did not seek a rematch with Witherspoon, who then went on to beat the talented, but erratic Greg Page in 1984 for the championship, losing later in the same year to the hard-jabbing Pinklon Thomas. Witherspoon would continue fighting many of the best of his generation, going one and one with James "Bonecrusher" Smith, defeating Frank Bruno, Tony Tubbs and Carl "The Truth" Williams.
