A bridge between the old traditions of catch as catch can wrestling, modern professional wrestling and mixed martial arts, Billy Robinson brought skill and legitimacy wherever he traveled.

Born in Manchester, England, Robinson was brought up by a family of boxers. After suffering an eye injury at 11, he was unable to follow his family into the sweet science, and instead dedicated himself to amateur wrestling. He instantly took to the sport, furthering his training by joining up with Billy Riley's catch style gym in Wigan, the Snake Pit. From there, Robinson became a champion amateur in the UK, and started his career in professional wrestling.

Robinson became a multiple time tag champion in the American Wrestling Association, facing the likes of Verne Gagne and Baron Von Raschke, demonstrating his fluid mat work, but it may well be Japan where he had the greatest impact, having matches with Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki while he passed along the catch style to future top stars in mixed martial arts including Kazushi Sakuraba.
