mil mi-8 'hip' (passenger helicopter)

The Mil Mi-8 (Russian: Ми-8, NATO reporting name: Hip) is a medium twin-turbine helicopter, originally designed by the Soviet Union, and now produced by Russia. In addition to its most common role as a transport helicopter, the Mi-8 is also used as an airborne command post, armed gunship, and reconnaissance platform. the Mi-8 is among the world's most-produced helicopters, used by over 50 countries. As of 2015, it is the third most common operational military aircraft in the world


Back in 1958 major strides were made on the front of helicopter developments, basically speeding up development 10 years ahead of their predictions. both the soviets and united states put great effort in their helicopter developments. the Mi-8 designed by the Mil design bureau was amongst the soviets most advanced helicopter projects at the time. a large utility helicopter that proved as good in transporting as it proved in being a weapons platform.

originally the mi-8 was set to make its first flight later in 1961, but thanks to these rapid developments the helicopter entered service in early 1958.

So it happened that the US by the way of spies took note of the development program, and while these helicopters and its plans where guarded day and night by the soviets under heavy security, the US managed to steal one helicopter right under the nose of the soviets, and set plans into action to test its capabilities for itself, and then reverse engineering it in the hopes to advance their own helicopter development program.
